Education Brings Light

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

“ You will know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”. -John 8:32

When you think about the concept of Education, what does it mean to you? Merriam-Webster defines Education as "the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated. "

Sometime or another in life, we have heard the phrases “Knowledge is power” or “it’s not what you know, but it's who you know” both of these phrases has truth to them. Yes, knowledge is power, but we have to know the one who releases the knowledge.

The book of Proverbs 1:7 teaches us that the foundation of knowledge is the fear of the Lord which is not a frightening type of fear, but one that inspires awe, and respect because the only way for us to know Him is to reverence Him. Establishing this relationship with the Lord adds to it, wisdom and understanding.

"We will acknowledge Him in all of our ways and He will make our paths straight." - Proverbs 3:6.

In the book of Deuteronomy chapter 11, Moses was reminding the children of Israel that they are to love the Lord their God with all their heart, mind, and soul, and to keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always. Moses was reminding the children of Israel of the mighty hand and outstretched arm that the Lord had already performed when they were in bondage in Egypt, and when He brought them through the wilderness.

Moses was encouraging them to know that God truly wanted to bless them abundantly, and although they had seen signs and miracles, they had not seen everything. It was crucial that they Love the one true and living God with all their Heart, Mind, and Soul - that they would not be deceived and turn aside to other gods. Worshiping the other gods would cause the Lord’s anger to arouse and shut up heaven that there would be no rain, so Moses told them to lay up the word of God in their heart, mind, and soul. He told them to teach the word of God to their children when they speak to them, when they sit in the house with them, when they walk with them, at nights and in the mornings because God wanted to bless them.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Knowledge, but then we must continue to grow and learn.

In the book of Luke 2:52 reads "Jesus increased in wisdom, and in stature, and in favor with God, and man". The purpose of education is to enlighten the individual and develop his/her capacity to the limit. It helps to discern right and wrong which allows one to make the right choices in life and to perform one's responsibilities properly.

Proverbs 2:9-11 reads "Then you will understand what is right and just and fair -- every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you."

In Matthew 19:13-15 the children were brought to Jesus so that He could pray for them and lay hands on them, but the disciples rebuked those who brought them to Him. Jesus said "suffer the little ones to come unto me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belong to such as these", then He placed His hands on them. We must push and do what ever it takes for our children to get the proper foundation of education.

"The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Billy Graham once said:

"The influence of a mother upon the lives of her children cannot be measured. They know and absorb her example and attitudes when it comes to questions of honesty, temperance, kindness, and industry.
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." - Frederick Douglass

A person will not realize that he/she is in the dark until he/she steps into the light; humility allows us to walk in the light of knowledge, invite Jesus Christ into your heart today and walk in the light.
